Renovating your home is a major and long term investment, and choosing the right interior designer (ID) can make all the difference. Whether you’re planning a full-scale makeover or a simple refresh, evaluating your ID before signing the contract is essential. The big question is how? How do you even assess an ID before engaging their services? For those of you who are lucky enough to have friends who can recommend reliable IDs that they have personal working experience – all good! But for the rest of us, we provided a step-by-step guide to help you make an informed decision.

1. Review Their Past Reno Works and Portfolio Thoroughly

A designer’s portfolio is your first glimpse into their style, versatility, and execution quality.

  • Look for projects similar to yours in size and scope.
  • Assess their range of styles—do they adapt to different aesthetics or stick to one?
  • Check for before-and-after photos to understand their transformation capabilities.
  • Being aesthetically beautiful is important but more importantly, does the designer also considered your lifestyle and practicality for day-to-day usage?

Tip: Ask if the portfolio includes actual client homes or just concept work.

2. Read Verified Client Reviews

Online reviews offer insights into the designer’s professionalism, reliability, and customer service.

  • Use Hausmark Award as your primary gauge, since this is an unbiased system based on community feedback, tipoffs and mystery shopper assessment.
  • Use platforms like Google, Facebook, and for secondary feedback.
  • Look for specifics: timelines, budget adherence, communication style.
  • Watch for patterns—recurring praise or complaints can reveal consistency.

Tip: Prioritize recent reviews from the past 6–12 months.

3. Verify Credentials and Accreditation

Ensure that the ID is registered with relevant authorities and has a solid track record.

  • Check for CaseTrust accreditation or professional membership (like RCMA, ICDS, SIDS etc.
  • Ask about insurance coverage and warranty policies.
  • Confirm they have experience with permits and regulatory.

Tip: A reputable ID will be transparent about their qualifications.

4. Assess Communication and Transparency

Good and honest communication is key to a smooth renovation experience.

  • During initial meetings, note if they listen actively and ask thoughtful questions or are they trying to sell renovation packages.
  • The designer should provide detailed quotation with itemized costs.
  • Clarify the scope of work, timeline, and payment schedule.

Red flag: Vague answers or pressure to sign quickly may signal trouble. Large upfront deposit or payment may signal a big red flag, in a normal arrangement, an small upfront deposit is common, followed by progressive payments.

5. Ask About Project Management and Subcontractors

While some ID firms have inhouse factory for fabrication of carpentry and other items, for economies of scale, most often work with other contractors and vendors for other works not in their area of expertise, for example electrical, tiling or painting works. You have the right to ask and understand how they manage these relationships.

  • Ask who will be your main point of contact, multiple contact points or even a 1 man show i.e. the boss over seeing 5 to 6 projects at the same time spells trouble
  • Inquire about their project management process.
  • Request to meet or learn about the subcontractors involved.

Tip: A well-managed team ensures smoother execution and accountability.

Evaluating an interior designer before awarding your renovation job isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about trust, transparency, and professionalism.
