Understanding Fake Reviews

In the context of a contractors’ review, there are a few categories of fake reviews, but the intent of such fake reviews are quite similar in nature, either to self-promote of own services and competitor sabotage. Self-promotion involves posting positive reviews about one’s own service to boost its reputation and competitor sabotage is self-explanatory to post negative comments on competitors’ website hopefully to stain their reputation.

The following are some examples:

  1. An actual fake or fabricated positive review, which can be used to trick a consumer into believing that a contractor has rendered a good service and hence encouraging engagements. These kinds of review are most often created by the company itself or employees or friends or relatives. Hence, my recommendation is to always cross check these reviews across the different platform available rather than relying on a single source.
  2. A negative review on a company’s site left by friends or employees of a competitor. This can be a common malpractice meant to sabotage a competitor.
  3. The suppression of a negative review on its own site. This is like a child showing her parents only an A score but thrashing the rest of the lousier scores in the bin. This is feasible if reviews are done on the company’s own website as they have the administrative rights to selectively delete negative review.
  4. Review “repurpose.” This occurs when a company “reuses” reviews probably in the past to make it look as they have been getting a lot of positive reviews.

Tell tales sign of Fake Reviews

  1. The review is exaggerated positive or overly negative.
  2. The review lacks detail and uses generic words like amazing, perfect, worst
  3. The review is very short and lacks substance, there is no description of the experience and journey
  4. Reviews provided are marked with a lot of grammatical mistakes
