Requirement-gathering began immediately, a non-negotiable step for any competent renovator, and this designer had done it with a systematic, well-designed line of questioning. The designer sought to understand our proposed lifestyle in detail, right down to kitchen appliances (air fryer, toaster, microwave), lifestyle devices (like coffee machine), bed size, TV size, and even the type and number of pets at home.

This level of granularity is essential before any layout or design is proposed as a home is renovated for live-in suitability, not just for showcase value, a principle Hausmark Inspectors consistently uphold.

On-site, we also noted that carpentry quality stood out. The team demonstrated strong design intent and execution, with several carpentry marvels purpose-built to conceal storage and minimise visual clutter. Hausmark Inspectors felt that the effort invested in engineering these mechanisms was clearly evident, reflecting a design philosophy that supports both aesthetics and daily practicality.

In terms of site management, we learned that Forefront adopts a tag-team model supported by an additional project manager who conducts regular site visits to guide workers, monitor workmanship, and ensure smooth progress. For seamless coordination, Forefront utilises an app that syncs between the project manager and designer. Within this app, a detailed design sheet outlines all job progress, site conditions, confirmed job schedules, and material selections, ensuring clarity and alignment before execution begins. The project manager, being on site more frequently, acts as the designer’s additional eyes on the ground, flagging issues promptly and responding in the group chat with homeowners whenever the designer is unavailable. Currently, this app is available only to Forefront’s internal team. From Hausmark’s perspective, extending access to homeowners in the future would be a valuable enhancement, allowing them to monitor renovation progress in real time. For now, the two-man tag-team model remains more than sufficient. After all, the role of an interior designer is to reduce the need for homeowners to micromanage their renovation, and this workflow reflects that spirit well

To Hausmark, design standards are not defined by aesthetics alone. A high-quality design must also be functional, live-in friendly, and aligned with the homeowner’s lifestyle. Forefront demonstrated this clearly, which is why Inspectors awarded them a high score for design standards.

We assigned the renovator two difficult design tasks. The first was to conceal a kitchen positioned right at the entrance, a challenging request that many renovators struggled with. Forefront addressed this convincingly across both proposed layouts, each offering a different strategy to visually remove the kitchen from immediate sight while maintaining usability.

The second task was to “create” space in both the living room and the adjacent bedroom, sharing the same wall. Our expectation was a visual solution, perhaps carpentry or lighting to create the illusion of space. Instead, the renovator proposed an idea that genuinely surprised us. They suggested removing the shared wall and replacing it with carpentry, effectively reclaiming approximately 20 t0 30 cm of actual usable space. This was a bold, unconventional, and highly creative solution, one we had not heard from any other renovator we met.
